When a person’s thinking is errant or misguided, it can negatively impact his or her entire life. This is not only true for those who don’t know the Lord but for Christians as well. Yes, I am saying that you can be a genuine Christian and still be screwed up in the way you think. But you don’t have to stay there. You can change your thinking to positively impact your life.
In Romans 12:2, we are told to “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (KJV). What’s interesting about this verse is that it is addressed to the church at Rome. That is, it is addressed to believers. Hence, mature and Christ-like thinking is not incidental to our being born again. If it were, there would be no need for Paul the apostle to write to the church, telling the members to be transformed by renewing their mind.
The way we think greatly defines the life we will enjoy—or not enjoy. We can’t separate how we live from how we think. Consider the following popular sayings:
- Winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win
- When you don’t know what to do, you do what you know
- A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways
- All things are possible to him who believes
These wise sayings and biblical truths underscore relationships between our thinking and our potential quality of life.
So, how do you become transformed, in accordance with the verse quoted above? You can do that by changing how you think. Again, you can’t separate how you think from how you live. So, how do you positively change your thinking?
First, you must have the right standard for thinking properly about life and its challenges. That’s one of the main reasons God has blessed us with the Bible. When you study the Word of God and it reveals to you that your thinking toward a particular issue differs from the biblical perspective, you must change your thinking to bring it in line with the Word of God.
This is not just about thinking differently. But our way of thinking determines the decisions we make and the actions we take in life. These in turn determine the kind of life we will have.
Of course, the premise of this entire post is that God always knows best, and hence His way of thinking is always superior to ours. That’s a no-brainer. His ways and thoughts are immeasurably higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9).
