Listen to people in the world talk today. They often do so as if God doesn’t count. Many of them make light of the authority of the Scriptures. To them, the Bible is just another literary work. They read it, heeding none of its warnings and acknowledging none of its practical value.
But the Bible is the Word of God, and here is what God says about His Word:
“So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11, NASB).
This divine proclamation speaks to the trustworthiness of God’s Word. It never fails to fulfill its objective. That’s why we should treasure His Word.
Is It the Words of Men or the Word of God?
I want to share two important points with regard to the verse quoted above. First, note where God says His Word is profitable: “in the matter for which I sent it.” The point is that when we misapply what God says, it can’t be effective. Why? Because when we do that, we fail to use His Word consistently with how He sent it to be used.
These days, we have become good at manipulating the Scriptures to say what we want them to. Doing so moves us from the Word of God to the words of men. In order for the Word of God to work for us, we must stay true to what He really said. Then, we must act accordingly.
My second point comes down to what we believe about the Scriptures. Do we believe the Bible is merely another book or collection of books?
According to the Bible, all Scripture is God-inspired (see 2 Timothy 3:16). Because of that, I believe the Bible is the Word of God and not the words of men. The men He used to pen the Bible were holy men who spoke as they were moved upon by the Holy Spirit (see 2 Peter 1:21). We should regard the Scriptures as being just as trustworthy as God literally speaking to us.
The Church and the Word of God Today
I believe the Christian church today is becoming increasingly distant from the Word of God. But that changes absolutely nothing. The things God spoke and that He inspired men to write in days of old are just as sure now as they were then. They cannot and will not fail in their divinely appointed mission. A more trustworthy resource for building our lives upon does not exist.
