Significant lifestyle changes have been legislated in America over the years. We have legalized abortion. Same-sex marriage is now legal. In some states, we have legalized the smoking of marijuana. Only God in heaven knows what will be next.
So, how can we properly navigate the trends of our society? Many of our public officials would have us to believe that everything’s changeable. They don’t seem to acknowledge the existence of moral absolutes. When they want to effect change to the moral fabric of society, they do so with little or no regard for the possible consequences. I submit that this very mindset of many of our politicians and judges greatly contributes to the chaotic society we now live in.
But we have been given the Word of God. The psalmist writes, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105, KJV). Accordingly, we don’t have to follow the way of this world. It’s not as if no alternative exists. God has given us His Word to be a light to our path.
I am among those who believe that God’s way is the best way. He created this world. He has the best plan for our lives. His Word is the standard by which all conduct in this world is to be evaluated. Our steps are to be ordered by the same. That’s what the psalmist is talking about in the verse quoted above.
Light to Our Path for an Increasingly Dark World
Just stop and think for a moment. Can you imagine how nutty the thinking of this world will be ten years from now if the Lord tarries? In light of the current trend, that’s a troubling thought. And it underscores the importance of you and me incorporating the Word of God into our lives for a light to our path.
It is important that those of us who preach and teach the Word of God be driven by the conviction of the psalmist. That is, that the Word of God is a lamp to our feet, and a light to our path. If we so believe, we will not be afraid to proclaim the truths of the Scriptures. We will not shun away from presenting the Bible as the supreme guide for Christian living.
The way of society is never right when it points us counter to the direction endorsed by the Word of God. This is the uncompromised message that our Christian congregations should hear coming from our pulpits. I’m glad I have the Word of God to guide me in the way of truth amidst this increasingly dark and twisted world. What about you?
