God has an awesome plan for each of our lives. He is faithful to provide the wherewithal to accomplish His purpose for us. He has gifted us and anointed each of us accordingly. In this post, I want to expand on that thought with regard to mothers and motherhood.
When I think about the breadth of motherhood, I am convinced that God could not have possibly left such a calling to chance. By that I mean He had to do some special things when he made women in order to equip them for such a role. In some respects, that point is a no-brainer. For instance, only a woman can become pregnant and totally sustain the life of the unborn child for the full term of pregnancy.
By contrast, the father has the primary responsibility to work and to provide for his family. If he refuses or fails to do so, the Bible says “he has denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel” (1 Timothy 5:8, KJV). Because this is a will of God for the man, He has placed in the heart of the man the desire to work and to be the provider for his family.
Of course, a father’s role is not limited to working to provide for his family. He also shares the parental role in the life of his children.
But the point I am stressing in this post is that a mother’s touch is incomparable because God made women special for the role of motherhood and nurturing.
The Universality of Motherhood
Mother’s Day is special to us because almost all of us are products of the nurturing hand of our mother or someone who assumed that role in our lives. I say almost because, unfortunately, some children were deprived of the love of a mother. This is a tragedy. It goes against the grain of God’s plan.
I am reminded of some of the great mothers of faith. They played vital roles in some of God’s greatest servants. For instance, Hannah who gave young Samuel back to God not long after he had been weaned. And Moses’ mother, who placed him in a little boat to escape death and trusted God to take care of Him. And of course, Mary, the mother of our Savior. Thanks to my lovely wife of our six children, I have seen this awesome power of motherhood mixed with faith in my own home times without number.
This special work God has done in women to equip them for motherhood exists across the board. That is, it is not limited to Christian mothers. God has created all women special for the role of motherhood. And so in closing, I want to say to all the mothers out there, thank you for all that you do. The world is indebted to you. May God’s richest blessings be yours this Mother’s Day and always.
