God’s ways are past finding out (Romans 11:33). No earthly source exists by which we can discover what makes Him tick. I believe we have some of the world’s greatest scientists and thinkers in America. Still, not one of them has ever discovered anything about the ways of God.
The only things we can possibly know about God are the things He reveals about Himself. And it is in the Bible that God reveals Himself to us. Many holy men contributed to writing the Bible. But the sole Author behind all these writers was God. All the revelations they penned about Him originated from Him.
An Example of How God Reveals Himself Through His Word
Many tend to view the Word of God as merely dos and don’ts for our life. But His commandments are more than that because God reveals Himself through His Word.
For instance, He told Israel to have no other gods before Him because He is a jealous God (Exodus 20:3). Moreover, He said that idolatry would invoke His judgment upon several generations of the offender (verse 4). This revelation of God about Himself gives us a clear picture of how He feels about us having other “gods” before Him.
So, what would have happened if God had not given Israel the Ten Commandments and other moral laws at Sinai? That would have been bad, really bad. The people would have been ignorant of God’s likes and dislikes. No doubt, during their journey in the wilderness, more adults would have made graven images, and children would have been more disobedient to their parents, etc.
God’s Word Defines Truth Which Cannot Be Altered
Sad but true, today we are raising a generation that is becoming increasingly less interested in God and His Word. Why is that a problem? Because God is the one who defines truth. Hence, a generation that does not know God does not know what truth is. Furthermore, truth cannot be altered. If it can be altered then it is not the truth. Here is an example:
I was looking on the back of a box for the nutritional value of a certain food item. The information given was based on a 2000-calorie a day diet. This is considered to be a healthy caloric intake, provided we are making healthy food choices. We can assume then that it has been well established that the body needs more than say 1000 calories a day to function properly.
Certainly, extreme dieters can confirm this. From experience they know there is a limit to how much you can cut back on food consumption and still function properly. God has created us in such a way that 1000 calories a day will not cut it. This truth has been established by the nature of our body.
But I have an idea. For those who are hungry because they can only afford to get 1000 calories a day, why don’t we officially lower the minimum recommended daily caloric intake to 1000 a day to solve their problem? Then by our new definition, these people would be getting the officially recommended daily amount of food energy. So, they should be OK, right?
Absolutely not! Because the truth is not subjective. It is a fact that God has created it in such a way that it needs more than 1000 calories a day. This fact cannot be altered.
The same applies to truth as defined by God. It cannot be altered, and when we try doing that it won’t bode well for us.
We are so blessed to have the Word of God so abundantly available to us in America. But too many people choose to not avail themselves of this priceless treasure. Hence, we find ourselves trying to serve a God, pray to a God, and tell others about a God we know much too little about.
How can our ignorance be excused when He has so abundantly given us His Word, and that is the place where God reveals Himself?
