None of us knows it all. Every one of us can use the advice of others at times. But our most trusted resource for advice should be the Bible. It is loaded with the counsel of God for every area of our life.
Where do you rank the counsel of God in your life? Is it your last resort or your first? Do you subject what He says in His Word to what others advise you, or vice versa? The counsel of men cannot rival that of the Lord. His way is always the best way. The more quickly we arrive at this resolve, the better our life will be.
Decisions Have Consequences
The importance of sound decision-making cannot be overstated. By and large, our quality of life is a product of the decisions we make. Sometimes, we need the input of others to help us make the best decision. On the other hand, the advice we receive is only as good as the one advising us.
For sure, one bad decision can cost you for a lifetime. What seems so right to us can turn out to be so wrong. Perhaps have you heard someone say, “I wish I had listened to God.”
Following the guidance found in the Word of God will always cause us to prevail. It behooves us then to make the Word of God our guide for life. As the psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105, NASB). I am learning more and more how to do that in my life. I thank God for His inexhaustible wisdom for life found in the Scriptures.
A Wise Man’s Warning Regarding the Counsel of God
During the days of the apostles, the religious leaders commanded them to stop preaching about Jesus. But the apostles refused to obey them because they were doing what God had commanded them to do. As the religious leaders wrestled with how to deal with the apostles’ boldness, a man by the name of Gamaliel offered then some sound advice:
“Stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”
Acts 5:38-39, NASB
In effect, Gamaliel was telling them that when someone is doing the will of God, to oppose them is to oppose God, and against Him you can’t win.
In the Bible, we can find answers to the tough questions in life. No matter what the situation is in our life, God has something to say about it in His Word. When we embrace His counsel, and place our faith in what He says, He will bring it to pass. No person or thing can make the counsel of God null and void. When we obey what He says, He will cause things to work out for our good.
