Want to be a winner in life? Find a winner in life and emulate his ways. Similarly, the Bible tells us to become “followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:12, KJV).
This verse refers to believers who know how to endure by faith and patience until they realize the promises of God. Being able to overcome the challenges to realizing a promise from the Lord is not incidental to becoming a Christian. Everyone who is serious about his or her walk with the Lord will benefit from finding a person who has learned how to do that and becoming a follower.
God’s will for each of us is to become the best version of the person He has called us to be. To reach that goal, we should follow the examples of those who have progressed to where we want to be. During my walk with God, I have been greatly helped and encouraged by others who have modeled how to endure adversities and subsequently experience the blessings of standing fast until the end.
Success seldom comes easily. The opposition or obstacles to our goals can seem daunting at times. We may even be tempted to talk ourselves out of paying the necessary cost of success. During those times of inner struggle, the people whom we allow to feed our minds can make the difference between moving forward and resolving to stay where we are.
The Importance of the Company We Keep
It’s hard if not possible to excel in life if we don’t carefully choose the company we keep. When my children were young, they did not agree with me on this point. My wife and I have six children. All of them had friends coming around to play with and spend time with them. My wife and I were constantly monitoring who came around. We were trying to groom our kids to keep their head on straight. And we understood the power of bad influence.
Our children tried to convince us that we didn’t need to worry about them getting off course. They argued that they knew right from wrong because we had so taught them. But we were not buying their naïve perspective.
A similar argument can be made regarding the company we keep as Christians.
Reading the promises of God in the Bible and saying we believe them is one thing. But to keep the faith and endure with patience until we realize the promises of God is another thing.
Winners inspire others to become winners. The people we connect with in life can be an asset or a liability to us becoming the champion in the faith God is calling us to be. So, if you want to become a winner in life for Christ, find a fellow believer who models such a life. And allow his or her life to speak to yours–if not in person, by their books, blog posts, podcast, etc.
