The title of this blog post may seem insignificant to some. Why should I rejoice in the fact that this is the day the Lord has made? they ask. “This day” is not unique to any other day, in terms of who made it. For it is God who made every day.
But though every day was made by God, no two days are exactly the same. God does not use the cookie cutter approach to the days He blesses us to see. Jeremiah writes, “His compassions fail not. They are new every morning….” (Lam. 3:22-23, KJV).
This is a good thing because the people here today are not the same people who were here yesterday. They may look the same, live and work at the same place, etc. But they are not the same.
Isn’t it amazing what a difference a day can make in a person’s life?
Consider this. A church pastor stands before the same congregation each Sunday. But in reality, it’s not the same congregation each week. Perhaps the sermon preached last Sunday seemed to fall on deaf ears. But things can change in the life of church members such that one week later, some will desperately want to hear last week’s message again.
What’s So Special about This Day
OK, so back to God. The psalmist says: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24, NIV). It appears as if the psalmist is citing the mere fact that God made this day as the basis for us to rejoice. But as we said earlier, God made every day.
On the other hand, each day God creates is loaded with its own supply of grace, sufficient for whatever challenges the day holds. Each day is loaded with awesome potential for us to achieve great things through Christ. Each day He creates comes complete with experiences and challenges aimed at helping us to mature in Him. For these reasons, we should rejoice each day God blesses us to live.
If you are like me, sometimes you wonder how a particular day fits into God’s plan for your life. I am talking about those days when what you encounter seems disconnected from anything in your life up to that point.
“What is God up to with this?” you ask. But as I sometimes tell my congregation, “Keep on walking; you’ll see it.” In other words, in due time, you will see how the yield of this day relates to God’s unfolding plan for your life.
No matter which day you read this post, this is the day the Lord has made. It is replete with His wisdom. It comes with everything you need to survive, strive or thrive. Trust Him. He’s got this day taken care of. Rejoice and be glad in it.
