“What would Jesus do if He were in my situation?” Have you ever asked yourself that question? During His public ministry, He met opposition from the scribes and Pharisees. The four accounts of the gospel document some of those passionate encounters. As I read those accounts, I marvel at the wisdom Jesus showed in dealing with His haters.
Remember when the scribes and Pharisees brought the woman to Jesus? They claimed they caught her in the act of adultery. But they had evil intent. They asked Him if He agreed with the Word of God that she should be stoned. “This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him” (John 8:6, KJV).
But He did not take the bait. Instead, He responded in such a way that those evil religious leaders all left without incident.
Jesus Came to Be Our Example
On earth, Jesus was the Word of God made flesh. Think about that. God did not simply send us a book of instructions on how to live. He sent His Word incarnate. Jesus was God’s message to us lived out in human flesh. He came on earth and lived out God’s message to us! That makes Him our perfect example.
Jesus “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). He did not live in an ideal and controlled environment. Rather, He lived in the real world. The religious leaders of His day opposed Him throughout His public ministry. But He always said and did what brought glory to the Father. We do well to learn of Him and to follow His ways that we might do likewise.
Perhaps as you read this post, you find yourself in a difficult place in life. You’re in a quandary as to how to move forward. Stop for a moment and ask yourself, what would Jesus do? Try answering that question based on the Word of God. Now ask yourself whether or not your findings are consistent with what you had in mind. If not, bring your thinking in line with Jesus’ way.
You will never go wrong following in the footsteps of Jesus.
I didn’t see the movie, “What would Jesus Do?” when it came out years ago. As I wrote this blog post, I viewed a trailer for the film. In it was this advice: ‘When you find yourself struggling with life’s difficult decision, ask yourself one simple question: “What would Jesus Do?”’
