Countless religions exist in our world today. No matter what you choose to believe, you are bound to find a religion that caters to your beliefs. But our world is not a game of religious quests void of consequences. Rather, what we choose to believe about God and His Son has eternal consequences.
In many countries, America being at the forefront, citizens have the legal freedom to choose the faith they will practice. But freedom of religion should not be taken to suggest legitimacy in the eyes of God. Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6, NASB). That makes the gospel of Christ the only true gospel.
Consider these words Paul the apostle wrote to the church at Galatia:
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel.”
Galatians 1:6, KJV
The word “another” used in the verse means another of different kind, as opposed to another of the same kind. In other words, the Galatians had in effect moved to a different gospel. What amazed Paul was how quickly (“you are so soon removed”) the people departed from faith in Christ.
At the root of Paul’s rebuke was his conviction that the gospel of Christ is the only true gospel. Everything else falls under the category of “another gospel.” Nearly all religions promise some form of good news to its followers. That is a fundamental nature of religion. But this does not change the fact that Jesus is the only way to God the Father.
The Devil’s War Against the True Gospel
One of the devil’s main missions is to keep the lost in spiritual darkness. The Bible refers to him as the god of this world; he has “blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ…should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:4, KJV).
Clearly, according to this verse, the devil understands the power of the gospel. He uses any means available to keep unbelievers blind to the light of the gospel. Those means include religions that are perversions of the only true gospel.
If it didn’t matter what the church members at Galatia had defected to believe, there would have been no need for Paul to rebuke them about it. God inspired Paul to address what was happening in Galatia because the matter was serious. Too many people today fail to discern the eternal implications of their religious affiliation.
I am sure this is a hard pill to swallow for some people. But in the eyes of God, the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is the only true gospel.
Our enemy the devil is the father of lies. He would have all men to believe a lie and be damned. He works relentlessly to that end. With an even greater level of intensity, however, we must labor for all men to come to know and believe this one true gospel and be saved.
