“What does God think of me?” Do you ever seriously ask yourself that question? Most of us tend to think rather highly of ourselves. But here is what the Bible says: “It is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends” (2 Corinthians 10:18, NIV). So, only God’s assessment of us matters in the end.
No man or woman is an island. Life involves interpersonal relationships. They require a certain degree of respect for or subjection to others. Not only because a functional society requires it to be that way but also because God has spoken on this matter. He commands us to honor our mother and our father, for instance. He also says we should respect those who are in authority.
The point is that we must be willing to give honor or respect where it is due while bearing in mind that pleasing God is always our primary goal. No one says this is an easy task. But as one of my supervisors used to say, “Mama never said life was fair.”
We live in a world of competing agendas. Most of the time, we can’t please everybody. In the end, the question that should concern us the most is, “What does God think of me?”
Hearing God Say “Well Done”
God loves us no matter what we do or don’t do. But consider the parable Jesus taught about three servants whom their lord made stewards of his goods. When the lord returned for the men to give account of their stewardship, he found that only two of them had used their lord’s money wisely. To these, their lord said, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21, KJV).
Jesus introduced this parable by saying the kingdom of heaven is like that. Accordingly, each of us is a steward of what the Lord has blessed us with. He expects us to exercise good stewardship with those gifts and resources. One day, Jesus will return and like the men in the parable, we must give an account of our stewardship.
Wouldn’t you like to hear the Lord say, “Well done” to you in the end? I believe all who are fruitful with what God has bestowed upon them will hear similar words from the Lord. So, let us remain faithful in doing what the Lord has equipped us to do.
As human beings, we like to be appreciated for what we do. But sometimes, our labor in this life can seem like a thankless job. For me, my previous pastorate certainly comes to mind. But as for our stewardship on this earth, our most important concern should be, what does God think of me? That’s all that matters in the end.
