First of all, I want to wish all mothers an abundantly blessed Mother’s Day. Thank you for all the amazing things you do.
The normal passage into motherhood is childbearing. But some women who have never given birth to a child become mothers through adoption or several other means. To the children they fulfill the role of motherhood for, these women are no less mothers than those who bear children.
In any case, motherhood involves a special relationship between a woman and a child. In this post, I want to focus upon the specialness of a mother praying for her children. In particular, I am speaking to those mothers with teens or young adults.
Generation Z teens and adults live in a world that’s extremely different from the world I knew as a teen or college student. One significant difference between those two generations is the spiritual condition of our world today. The powers of darkness are ramping up their assaults against humanity. These assaults have placed incredible pressure on today’s teens and young adults.
It is vitally important—parents—that we pray for our children. And I happen to believe there is something special about a mother praying for her children. Why? Because mothers have a unique bond with their children.
Mothers are the ones who carry their children in their womb and give birth to them. Or they are the ones who take adopted children and love them as if they bore them. The same is true for the women who are thrust into the role of motherhood because of a child’s abandonment of some other reason.
The Power of a Mother Praying
It is through a special bond and motherly love that mothers of faith pray for their children.
In the human realm, a mother’s love runs deeper than most if not all other kinds of love. I know exceptions exist. For instance, consider a mother who abandons her newborn child in a garbage can. We find that behavior shocking because it is worlds away from what we expect from a mother with regard to the unique bond that should exist between a mother and her child.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Galatia, he talks about “faith expressing itself through love” (Gal. 5:6, NIV). In fact, he says in Christ, the only thing that avails anything is faith that expresses itself through love. At times, when someone came to Jesus for help, the Bible says He was moved with compassion. He ministered in faith through love.
Similarly, a mother praying for her children is an example of faith expressing itself through (motherly) love. Imagine the countless lives that have been changed, protected, or positively impacted as a result of mothers praying for their children.
So, this Mother’s Day and beyond, may God bless all of you mothers out there. Continue to pray for your children. They need our prayers like never before. We cannot let the devil have them. And I thank God for that special place within you from which you pray for your children.
