I remember a story a preacher told in church over 50 years ago. I was not even a teen yet. I had little or no interest in God at the time. But the gist of the story has stayed with me.
This preacher told us about the truth and the lie. They were personnified through two animals. The two went on their respective journeys to tell their respective versions of something that had happened. The lie ran fast taking short cuts so he could arrive first to give his version. The truth took his time and arrived much later. But when the truth arrived, it was still the truth.
The point is that the truth will always be the truth. All the lies in the world can’t change or nullify truth. When we walk accordingly, ultimately, the truth always prevails over the lie.
In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he talks about the whole armor of God. Included in this armor is the armor of truth (Ephesians 6:14). Truth is the most powerful weapon we have against lies.
Arming Yourself with the Weapon of Truth
The Bible refers to the devil as the father of lies (John 8:44). He weaponizes the lie against us. He successfully used it against the woman in the garden of Eden to overthrow humanity. Over time, he has perfected the use of the weapon of lying. Why should he change his strategy when it continues to work for him?
But let us remember why Paul the apostle wrote, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, for us to put on the whole armor of God, which includes the truth:
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11, NASB
We conclude then that the weapon of truth enables us to stand firmly against the lies of the devil and of others he uses against us. But it’s not enough for us to merely know the truth. Rather, we must arm ourselves with the weapon of truth. And the reason we can have faith in the weapon of truth is because God is always on the side of truth. It is He alone who makes it so that truth always prevails over the lie.
If we believe in the power of arming ourselves with the weapon of truth, we will walk in truth daily. We won’t always know about the schemes of the devil or of other people that are directed against us. We just need to make sure that we are walking in the truth because when we walk accordingly, truth always prevails over lies and evil.
Our source of truth is the Word of God. Whenever we walk in the truths of His Word, He honors His Word, causing us to be victorious. Lying and attempting to sustain lies merely beget more lies, tying the purveyor thereof into his own web. But Jesus says the truth will make you free.
