Christians sing and talk a lot about the power of God. But how much do we experience it in our life? I believe we are only scratching the surface in this area. God’s power toward us is indescribably greater than we can imagine.
In Paul the apostle’s letter to the church at Ephesus, he prayed for God to give the believers there a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Ephesians 1:17). Through this revelation and wisdom, he wanted them to know “what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe” (verse 19, NASB).
Suppose someone placed a million dollars in your bank account unbeknownst to you. You would be a millionaire and not even know it. Even if you were struggling financially, you would never try to access the million dollars you have because you don’t know the money exists.
I believe many believers are that way regarding God’s great power available to them. Having little insight about it, they don’t endeavor to access it for their life.
When I first became a Christian, I was a member of a local church that did not believe in the greater works of the Holy Spirit. We believed in being born of the Holy Spirit but that was about it. My pastor didn’t preach and teach about spiritual gifts and the miracle working power of God. Because these things were not taught and preached, we didn’t get any revelation about them. Accordingly, we didn’t pursue them for our personal lives.
That’s why Paul the apostle prayed for the saints at Ephesus that God would give them the spirit of wisdom and revelation. The goal was for them to come to know God’s great power that was available to them.
Available Power versus Experienced Power
Paul talks about the “surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.” This phrase reflects the magnitude of the power of God available to us. Paul refers to it as “surpassing greatness” (NASB). But the question is, how much of this available power do we experience in our life? That’s what really matters.
So, how do we experience more of God working in our life? We do that by following God’s prescription for Him to work in our life.
That brings us to the importance of the Word of God. Paul prayed for the saints at Ephesus to receive a spirit of wisdom and revelation. The Bible is our main source of revelation and wisdom. It has so much to reveal about God’s power available to us.
To experience that power, however, we must believe what the Bible says about the nature and the magnitude of God’s power toward us. Then we must properly align ourselves with His Word in order to experience that power. The point is that we will experience God working in and through our life only to the extent that we yield ourselves to Him. The more we incline our heart to His the more He will work through us.
As I study the Word of God and the incredible things it says about God’s great power toward us, I am convinced that we are only scratching the surface. Let us go deeper. God is the same God today that He was in days of old. He can still do exceedingly above what we can ask or think.
